biography
Max Ferguson is an artist, photo editor and educator from London.
He founded Oval Press and Splash & Grab Magazine; is the Photography Editor of Granta Magazine; and is a Senior Lecturer in photography at the London College of Communication. Previous expereince includes five years as the Photography Director at Port Magazine and several as a freelance photo editor at the FT Weekend Magazine.
Alongside Cian Oba-Smith, Max co-authored The Portrait Photographer’s Manual [Thames & Hudson]. He is the author of three photo books: Whistling for Owls, Deadfall and Whiplash Memorial (WIP); and the publisher of Suzie Howell’s a bowl of tears to drink and Sana Badri’s Studio 9 the Market [all Oval Press].
Recent exhibitions include The Tower Block at Peckham24 [London, 2026]; solo shows of Whiplash Memorial at KOPPEL Collective [London, 2026] and IC Visual Lab [Bristol, 2025]; a solo and group show of Turbulence in 2025; and group shows with the collective Figure.8 in 2024 and 2025
